Cinematographer
Brooklyn-based cinematographer Luca Fantini grew up in Cariso, a small village outside of Milan, Italy.
Inspired by the lighting and moodiness of painters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt, Luca began exploring creative avenues that allowed him to channel his imagination into photography.
At age 21 with a motion picture camera in hand, Luca set out on a worldwide journey to shoot wildlife documentaries, many of which received accolades. These experiences compelled Luca to adopt a swift and creative approach to shooting as challenging conditions often dictated.
Eventually, Luca transitioned into commercial work, and when he moved to NY he continued on this path while expressing his artistic voice on fictional pieces.
Luca works collaboratively to bring out the truth in a story, and he believes that a simple, nimble crew is at the essence of great filmmaking. As his journey now incorporates larger-scale productions and feature films, he maintains this approach through the strong foundations and skills he’s built over the years.
Most recently, Luca shot the feature film Our Son, starring Billy Porter and Luke Evans, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and is currently streaming on Apple TV.
Luca has been a visiting professor at the University of Padova, and the author of "Fare un Documentario" – a guide to documentary filmmaking widely adopted in Italian universities and film schools. He continues to mentor fledgling filmmakers and considers mentorship to be a bedrock to creating a sustainable career in film.
When he’s not on set, Luca’s exploring new places and interests, or spending time with his loving family, to whom he owes much of his success.
