Natalie O’Brien is a Los Angeles based Costume Designer who enjoys creating characters and telling their stories through her independent film and commercial work.

Feeding a passion for period aesthetics, Natalie has created 14th century nun habits for an Italian convent (The Little Hours directed by Jeff Baena), 19th century fashion to dress Chloe Sevigny & Kristen Stewart (Lizzie directed by Craig McNeil), and, most recently, a 1970’s New Hollywood inspired world for the critically acclaimed I’m Your Woman directed by Julia Hart starring Rachel Brosnahan. 

O’Brien was able to draw on her Iranian background for her first notable film, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the black and white, Farsi vampire film went on to multiple Independent Spirit and Gotham Award nominations (and has spawned some pretty killer Halloween costumes). O’Brien has become a frequent collaborator of Amirpour and their next film together, The Bad Batch, won a special prize after premiering at the Venice International Film Festival in 2015. The latest film that Natalie worked on was Lily’s latest film Blood Moon that will be premiering 2021, starring Hate Hudson. 

O’Brien also designed Alma Haarel’s Honey Boy, starring Shia Labeouf & Lucas hedges which won a special Jury Prize after its premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. She figured out quite early on in her life that film is where she’s most comfortable & passionate. She started out by working on a plethora of styling & commercial jobs while still in college then dipped into a few years of TV on a Soap Opera and working alongside some of her mentors, Rodrigo Garcia & Jon Avnet.   

Raised by an Iranian mother and British father first in England and then in California, O’Brien feels at home traveling the world for work and loves exploring a new place while creating a new visual world for a story.
